The scientometric analysis has demonstrated that the dialectical interdependence of the formation and destruction processes of soil resources is adequately reflected in both national and international research priorities. Presently, an independent interdisciplinary scientific field, erosion science, with its subject (the process, factors and results of water erosion) and object of study (erosion geosystem) has emerged. New approaches to the assessment of soil reproduction were developed which form the basis of estimating the soil loss tolerance and the formation of the rehabilitation agriculture concepts as well as of the re-naturalisation of geosystems. Promising applications of GIS in erosion science have been identified: information and referencing, monitoring of soil and land, automated mapping, spatial-temporal analysis and modeling, the creation of decision support systems in planning and land management. Integration of GIS with the remote sensing data generates new opportunities in erosion science, particularly in identifying the spatial-temporal dynamics of eroding soils and the quantitative assessment of gulley erosion.
